Researchers are testing virus-based osteoarthritis treatment in horses

University of Florida researchers are utilizing gene therapy techniques to develop a potential one-time treatment for osteoarthritis.

The research team, led by UF professor of orthopedics Steven Ghivizzani, has received a one-year, $900,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease in order to fund the research, according to a UF press release.

Having had success in the past with trials on small animals such as mice, Ghivizzani’s new research will expand into trials on horses, with an end goal of human clinical trials. Read more
