In the world of equine medicine, there have been a few years of wild and crazy times in regard to the many diseases of horses.
Some diseases that the United States was considered free of have reappeared within our borders.
Two of these are Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) and Equine Piroplasmosis (EP).
The country was considered free of CEM, but, in 2008, mares and stallions within the United States were found to be infected with the disease. More than 1,000 horses have been tested in the lower 48 states for CEM at a cost of $1,000 to $1,500 per animal. The cost depends on whether the horse is a mare or stallion.
While the mare just needs to have her reproductive tract cultured, a stallion must be cultured and then test bred to three mares that subsequently have to have their reproductive tracts cultured.
If any horses are found positive for the disease, they have to be treated and then tested again. Read more…
