HELENA — The Montana Board of Livestock voted Wednesday to slaughter a herd of cattle in which brucellosis was found, even though the Bridger-area ranchers who own the animals haven’t reached an agreement about how much they’ll be paid for the herd.
Without that agreement, Montana will lose its brucellosis-free status if the cattle aren’t killed by Tuesday, said Christian Mackay, executive director of the state Livestock Department. The order gives the ranchers until 12:01 a.m. Friday to deliver an agreement to the Livestock Department.
