Swine previously held in recall now approved to enter food supply

Swine that have been held from market in several states because they were known to have consumed melamine-contaminated feed have now been released for entry into the human food supply, the USDA and FDA announced today. Poultry that have been held from market because of melamine exposure continue to be held pending more tests.

The swine were determined safe for human consumption using a test scientists have developed to measure levels of melamine in the tissues of affected swine. Results indicated less than 50 parts per billion of melamine in the animals, which is considered to pose a very low risk to humans. A similar test is being developed for poultry.
