NASHVILLE – By a one-vote margin, a bill that lays the groundwork for establishing a horse meat processing plant in Tennessee advanced through a key House subcommittee Wednesday despite opposition from singer Willie Nelson.
State Rep. Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, is sponsor of the bill – HB1428 – that he said can help resolve an overpopulation of horses that has left thousands of the animals abandoned.
In an earlier House committee speech, Niceley had cited singer Nelson as an example of well-meaning people who have added to horse problems by pushing to protect them from slaughter.
Nelson, having learned of Niceley’s remarks, in turn sent The Tennessean newspaper an opinion piece saying that Niceley was misguided. The singer’s daughter, Amy Nelson of Lyles, Tenn., and his granddaughter, Raelyn Nelson of Goodlettsville, appeared before the House Budget Subcommittee on Wednesday to add their voices against the bill.
