An animal rights group on Wednesday released a stomach-turning video of calf mistreatment as an indictment of the meat industry as a whole, but the owner of the calf farm where the events took place says the footage does not represent how he operates.
“I take what’s happened very seriously,” said Kirt Espenson, owner of E6 Cattle near Hart. “I’m deeply saddened by what happened on my watch. The employees who violated our code of conduct were terminated several weeks ago.”
Chicago-based Mercy for Animals sent a contractor with a hidden camera who worked from March 2 to the 18 at E6, where Espenson houses as many as 15,000 calves to raise as replacements for dairy herds.
“Workers savagely bashed in skulls,” said Daniel Hauff, director of investigations at Mercy for Animals. “Farm animals should not be excluded from protection. People should boycott these industries and adopt a compassionate vegetarian diet.” Read more…
