Virginia Investigates PETAs Animal Shelter

New documents uncovered by the Center for Consumer Freedom reveal that the state of Virginia attempted to revoke People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) license to operate an animal shelter. Virginia’s investigation was based on evidence that PETA has killed more than 25,000 dogs and cats at its headquarters—the vast majority of the dogs and cats it took in—according to filings it makes with the state.

New documents uncovered by the Center for Consumer Freedom reveal that the state of Virginia attempted to revoke People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) license to operate an animal shelter. Virginia’s investigation was based on evidence that PETA has killed more than 25,000 dogs and cats at its headquarters—the vast majority of the dogs and cats it took in—according to filings it makes with the state.

Despite PETA’s $35.8 million annual budget, the state inspector determined that PETA’s shelter “does not contain sufficient animal enclosures to routinely house the number of animals annually reported as taken into custody.” This is probably because animals in PETA’s custody aren’t housed for long. In a review of 290 of PETA’s animal records, the inspector determined that 245 (84 percent) of animals taken in were euthanized within 24 hours. He astutely described the shelter, which is allegedly open to the public, as being akin to a “euthanasia clinic.”
