Gettin 6 yr. Old Horse in Top Competitive Condition

Dear Martha
I have been involved rodeo pretty much my entire life, but always been a roper. I now have a barrel horse and it seems that he needs to be in much better shape than my break-a-way/goat tying horse ever needed to be in. I also just move to Terrell, TX just outside of Dallas. Could you give me some advice on how I should get my 6 yr. old horse in top competitive condition, as well as how to exercise in the wonderful heat of Texas while maintaining a day job.
Sincerely
Teri

I like for my competition horses to be able to go about 4-6 miles at a long trot and lope and then do some additional walking. We try to ride at least 4 days Mon- Fri and have one turnout day if we are hauling on Saturday and Sunday both. As far as exercising in the heat, I suggest that you try to ride either early morning or very late at night to avoid heat stress.
Martha Wright
