Old to run barrels

howdy

ok i have a 9 yrs old quarter horse and i was wondering if she was too old to run barrels? she learns quick and is in great condition? im just wondering if she is too old too do it and don’t want to risk hurting her! And the barrels are set up like this right: time line to the first and second barrel is 60 feet and from the 1st and 2nd one is 90 feet then to the 3rd barrel is 105 feet right?
thank you
Lizzie

Lizzie,

You have your measurements exactly right for your barrel pattern if you are wanting to set up a standard WPRA course. And NO! your mare is definitely not too old to run barrels as long as she is physically sound and healthy. Go for it! I know you will have a lot of fun training her…

Martha Wright

hey thank you
i want to get started barrel racing but i need how to work me and my horse up. i mean how do you start traning you and your horse?
thank you lizzie

Lizzie,

I would suggest that you purchase a copy of our book, “Barrel Racing, Training The Wright Way”. The book is available on our website at www.edandmartha.com and then go to the Tack Room page. It will give you lots of training suggestions and exercises that you can use to get you and your horse started running barrels.
