Training To Hard

Hi Martha,

I bought a young gelding last August and he will be two on April 22, 2004. He has been in training for the last several months and many of the “know-it-alls” at my stable tell me he is being worked too hard and I should be careful of problems with his legs. He gets out every day and runs around in the arena for about 15 minutes and then the trainer works with him for about 45 minutes to 1 hour (sometimes the training is done only 3-4 times a week). No tight circles or anything like that but he does some lunging and running around as part of his training.

I don’t feel he is being worked too hard but I wanted to see what you think.

Thank you.

I suppose it would depend on what your trainer is doing with the horse during training sessions and what type of ground the horse is being worked in while training. We usually pasture ride our two year olds and get them traveling and handling nicely. We don’t start any intensive training until they are three year olds and more physically mature.
