GREENBUSH — Susan Kilton and her daughter Carly Hakala, 34, firmly believe donkeys can work miracles.
Sweetpea, the smallest donkey on their farm near Greenbush, saved Carly’s life.
“My daughter has a form of mental illness that is now managed wonderfully due to her special interest and love for donkeys,” Kilton said.
While she was in college, Carly began to exhibit odd behaviors. Although she was a bright student, Carly dropped out of school after two years and eventually was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She became a recluse of sorts, not wanting to leave the house. At times, thoughts of suicide surfaced.
