Fewer vets in the barnyard

Most veterinarians in America were food-supply vets in the early 1900s but today, 70 percent of vets care for pets. Only 8,860, or 10 percent, of the nation’s 81,500 vets work with food-supply animals, which do not include horses. Food-supply vets protect the quality of the meat and dairy products that reach our kitchen tables, control disease and make sure animals are treated humanely. Race legend John Henry dies at 32

Father Time finally beat John Henry. The 32-year-old gelding, who went from claimer to acclaimed as a two-time Horse of the Year and equine folk hero, died yesterday at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, his home for the past 22 years. For more info click here

Horse Export Numbers Bring Focus Back to Federal Slaughter Ban

A Sept. 30 article and photographs in the Houston Chronicle examining horse slaughter procedures in Mexico has shifted the attention of animal welfare groups back to a federal ban on exporting horses for the purpose of slaughter. The article came in the wake of the Sept. 21 closure of Cavel International of DeKalb, Ill., the last U.S. horse slaughter facility. According to the USDA Market News Oct. 4 report, 31,086 horses declared as animals intended for slaughter have been exported to Mexico so far this year. At this point last year the total was 6,391. Storm worm exploits YouTube

Spammers are exploiting YouTube’s “invite your friends” function to send spam containing a variant of the “Storm worm.” Bradley Anstis, director of product management at security firm Marshal, said that spammers are taking advantage of the YouTube function that lets people invite friends to view videos that they have viewed or posted. The function allows someone to e-mail any address from an account.
