Owner won’t be charged in pony deaths

No animal-cruelty or other criminal charges will be filed against the owner of two ponies found shot to death last week in Snoqualmie, authorities said Thursday. A necropsy determined that the animals were killed instantaneously — a key factor in determining whether the act was considered humane and, therefore, legal, said Diana Toledo, enforcement coordinator with King County Animal Care and Control. Concerns About Disclosure in Farm Bill

WASHINGTON – Journalists and government watchdog groups say that crucial food safety information could be kept from the public under a farm bill the Senate is debating. The Society of Professional Journalists, the American Civil Liberties Union and others say an attempt to ban the disclosure of information from a national animal tracking system could exempt some Agriculture Department documents from freedom of information laws. “It’s essential that citizens be made aware of dangers in their own communities, including livestock that can cause serious illness and death,” said David Cuillier of the journalists’ organization. N. Idaho authorities concerned about malnourished horse cases

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Authorities in northern Idaho who recently found four dead horses and eight others that were malnourished say high feed prices could lead to more such cases. “We all know that hay and feed prices are skyrocketing and that causes some people to not properly nourish their animals,” said Kootenai County sheriff’s Capt.
