Most veterinarians in America were food-supply vets in the early 1900s but today, 70 percent of vets care for pets. Only 8,860, or 10 percent, of the nation’s 81,500 vets work with food-supply animals, which do not include horses.
Food-supply vets protect the quality of the meat and dairy products that reach our kitchen tables, control disease and make sure animals are treated humanely. New York, the country’s third-largest dairy producer after California and Wisconsin, would feel the effects of a vet shortage.
